MAIF is an acronym for the Maryland Auto Insurance Fund, an independent state agency in Maryland. MAIF insurance is auto liability insurance made available to licensed Maryland drivers who, for whatever reason, are unable to get auto insurance on the private market.
Note that MAIF is not an insurance company. MAIF insurance policies are sold through authorized auto agents such as Roadway.
There are only three requirements to qualify for MAIF auto insurance:
- You must be a resident of Maryland.
- You must have a current Maryland registration or driver’s license.
- You must be unable to provide proof that you are unable to obtain car insurance through a private carrier in Maryland. You will be asked to provide proof of denial from at least two private carriers. The reason for denial cannot be failure to make payments.
If you meet all three of these requirements, you will not be turned down for MAIF insurance. You automatically qualify, no matter what your driving history may be or whether you have violations or offenses on your record.
In Maryland, drivers must legally maintain a minimum of liability insurance coverage for their vehicles. The state requires this liability insurance to protect against property damage or bodily injury in the case of an accident. MAIF insurance also offers full coverage, which goes beyond simply liability insurance to include comprehensive and collision coverage. This adds extra protection for your own property damage or bodily injury, as well as insurance against fire, theft, weather, and vandalism.
As with private carriers, MAIF insurance does provide discount opportunities for low-risk drivers. Keep your driving record free of traffic violations and car accidents, and you will be able to get lower premiums on your insurance policy.
MAIF also offers a discount for continued coverage, where drivers who have 12 or more months of MAIF insurance without any lapse will be able to maintain a low rate. If there is a lapse in your MAIF auto insurance, you may reinstate the policy provided that your policy expired no more than 60 days ago and you are still accident free.
