As summer draws to a close and the kids head back to school, Roadway Insurance would like to bring to your attention some back to school driving tips. As the roads get congested and traffic increases, drivers will need be aware of school buses and pedestrians at this busy time of the day.
- Be aware of school zones that have posted signals with reduced speed limits.
- As always, be observant of your surroundings when in the driver’s seat. Be aware of pedestrians on foot as they may emerge from in between parked cars in busy areas.
- Stop at cross walks where pedestrians have the right of way. Do not stop your vehicle in a cross walk, impairing a pedestrian’s ability to cross.
- On roadways, drivers must stop in both directions when encountering a school bus stopped for entering or exiting students. Never pass a stopped school bus on the right.
It’s a good idea to allow for extra commute time during the back to school rush. Be sure to use good judgement and exercise caution when driving in and around school zones. Also, be aware that new teenage drivers may be entering the driving scene this time of year.
Most of all, remember that you must be insured to drive and be compliant with the Maryland State car insurance laws. The state of Maryland requires drivers to have a minimum coverage of 30/60/15:
$30,000 for bodily injury per person
$60,000 for bodily injury for two or more people
$15,000 for property damage
